Mrs. Griffin

Welcome!

I am so excited to be here at ASK Academy for another school year! Below, I have included some information about me and about my classes. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
About Me: I have a Bachelor's in Microbiology from Eastern New Mexico University and I began my teaching career in Colorado where I taught 6-8 grade and all subjects (except history) in my 4 years there. I moved back to New Mexico and started at The ASK Academy in 2020 where I have taught science and biomed classes. 6th graders are my favorite grade level and I'm happy to be working with them again this year.

I am married with a son, 3 cats, and a dog. When I'm not teaching, I love reading or spending time outside with my family.
Survey of Biomedical Science (Fall Semester)
The purpose of this course is to introduce scholars to many different aspects of biomedical science and the healthcare industry, as well as to aid in solidifying their understanding of science. Scholars will work heavily in groups to research topics that are interesting to them and will present frequently to the class. Presentations are required and are a large part of the scholar's grade. For concerns about presenting, please reach out to me in advance to discuss. Parents are always welcome to attend presentation or showcase days to support their scholars. I will do my best to communicate these dates as soon as possible. Please note that the Survey of Biomedical Science class will have several projects that follow HOSA-Future Health Professionals guidelines for competitive events. More information on HOSA can be found at hosa.org or by reaching out to me directly.
Project Lead the Way: Green Architecture (Spring Semester)
The purpose of this course is to introduce scholars to engineering and the design process in an exciting and applicable way. Scholars will gain knowledge of engineering practices as well as knowledge about construction, architecture and design, and sustainability of housing choices. Scholars will have the opportunity to design their own dream bedroom, build model houses to scale, and eventually design (and possibly build) their own tiny home or container home. Designs will be on display in the classroom for any parents who would like to see them, and there will be a showcase at the end of the year for scholars to demonstrate what they have learned.

Expectation for Class:
  • Be on time and attend regularly
  • Engage in learning and participate in class
  • Complete coursework by due dates
  • Maintain respectful behavior and focus on academics
  • Use electronic devices only for academic purposes
  • Do not violate the dress code found in the scholar handbook
  • Do not cause any harm to people or property
  • Use your planner to keep track of assignments

HOMEWORK POLICY: Due to the nature of the class, homework is very rare, and will only be assigned if work was not completed in class. If your scholar is frequently coming home with homework for this class, please reach out to me. Your scholar may not be using class time appropriately.

PLANNER POLICY: Each scholar has been provided with a planner to use for the year. It is expected that scholar fill out their planner daily for each class. All information for the day will be provided at the beginning of class for scholars to add to their planner. I am asking that parents help with scholar accountability by checking scholar planners each night.

LATE WORK POLICY: Scholars will be given an automatic deduction of 20% for any assignment turned in after the assigned due date. A “0” will be given on the due date and will be replaced with the score received after submission of the assignment. Any late work must be submitted by the following dates in accordance with progress reports and report cards being finalized.
September 3rd (All work prior to this date is due)
October 9th (All work prior to this date is due)
November 12th (All work prior to this date is due)
December 20th (All work prior to this date is due)
February 4th (All work prior to this date is due)
March 7th (All work prior to this date is due)
April 8th (All work prior to this date is due)
May 23rd (All work prior to this date is due)

ABSENCES: Please be sure to notify The ASK Academy if your scholar will be absent. Work for absent scholars will be collected and will be available for the scholar to collect upon return. If you notify me of your scholar’s absence, I can often get the work to you the same day, which prevents scholars from falling too far behind. Please note: it is the responsibility of your scholar to collect work that was missed upon their return.

CELL PHONE POLICY: Cell phones should not be used during class for any reason unless expressly stated by the project manager. This policy includes, but is not limited to, using the cell phone to: text, record video or picture, answer phone calls, check emails, or conduct research in place of a chromebook. Parents who need to contact scholars during school hours should do so by calling the front office. Scholars who violate the cell phone policy will be asked to turn in their cell phone until the end of the class period.

Grading:

Quarter Grades

Scholars will be evaluated on the following criteria within each quarter:

Assessments (tests/quizzes/projects)-- 50%

Practice (all other work) -- 50%

Semester Grades

Scholar’s semester grades will be calculated as follows:

Quarter 1(3) – 40%

Quarter 2(4) – 40%

Semester Final – 20%

Google Classroom:
All Scholars need to ensure that they have joined Google Classroom for their correct period. Please contact me if you need the Google Classroom Code.

Google Classroom has an option for parents to receive communication about work that students are assigned in Google Classroom. This will include information on missing assignments and assignments that have been graded.

If you would like to receive this communication, please send me an email, and I will do my best to ensure that you receive that information.

Attendance:
ASK Academy scholars are expected to arrive on time (8:00AM) and be adequately prepared for their day. All scholars who arrive past 8:03 AM to their first period class must have a pass from the front office. Tardy scholars must be signed in by parents at the front office. Please contact The ASK Academy on the website at: https://www.theaskacademy.org and click the Attendance link on the home page or call 505-891-0757 to notify us of your scholar’s absence.

It is essential that all scholars be present and on time for class and stay for the duration of the class when at all possible. Classes will consistently be taking new notes or working on their projects, and missed information will be hard to make up.

If students have planned absences, please communicate these with the school and I if at all possible so students can be kept up to date.

The Academy requires that all scholars wear a prescribed uniform.

Tops (Shirts) – All scholars must wear an ASK polo shirt, with the ASK logo, purchased from an approved ASK vendor. The color of the ASK polo shirt identifies the scholar with their selected career pathway.  Polo shirts will not be overly baggy, nor exceedingly tight. Shoulder seams must be at the shoulders, and shirts cannot hang down below mid-thigh level.  Middle School – Red or Light Blue  High School –  Biomedical Sciences – Dark Green or Purple  Engineering and Design – Royal Blue or Burgundy  Bottoms (Pants) –  Allowable pants/slacks of solid color (khaki or black) and should meet our uniform expectations. They should be of a non-stretch, khaki or similar material.  No shorts, skorts, skirts, cargo pants (pants with many pockets) are allowed.  No excessive “sagging” is allowed. Inseam of pants must be where legs and torso join.  Excessively tight pants such as spandex, yoga pants, leggings, sweat pants or other non-uniform fabrics are not allowed.

Footwear

Scholars must wear closed-toe shoes at all times at the Academy (no sandals, flip-flops, crocs, open-back shoes, slippers, or shoes made out of foam are allowed). Please remember that our learning spaces have sharps, blades, power tools, solvents, and acids so adherence to this policy is a priority. No headwear Hats, bandanas, beanies, headbands with extraneous distractors, etc. including sweatshirt hoods, are not allowed inside the Academy. Exemptions for headwear that may be required for religious reasons will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Outerwear

Jackets will not qualify as a replacement to an ASK polo. Jackets may be worn as long as they have a zipper front and are not excessively baggy (shoulder seams are at the shoulders and cannot hang below mid-thigh level). When worn inside, jackets must allow full view of the ASK polo (be worn unzipped indoors). Scholars can wear sweatshirts and hoodies under, but not over the ASK polo. Please remember that the ASK polo is one of our layers of security. Clothing or jewelry that are determined to pose a risk to potential injury while in the learning environment will not be permitted. Attire or accessories which advertise, display or promote any drug, alcohol, tobacco, gang, sexual activity, violence, disrespect or bigotry towards any group, or items that are associated with a gang are not permitted. All attire should be suitable for a professional environment.

Support Time:
All scholars will be able to come for additional support on Fridays from 8-10. I strongly encourage students to attend these sessions if they are struggling with a concept or find themselves falling behind in class.

I am also available at lunch time or after school for support if scholars reach out to me in advance to meet during these times.

I want to support all scholars in their learning, and will do my best to be available whenever they need me as long as they are communicating these needs.
